Cat Sudoku: How to Play It Free Online

You can play Cat Sudoku free in your browser at Cat Sudoku. There is nothing to install and no account to make. The board is a grid split into coloured regions, and you place cats so that every row, every column and every colour has exactly one cat, and no two cats touch. Boards come in three sizes: 5 by 5, 6 by 6 and 7 by 7.

Cat Sudoku rules

There are four rules, and all of them hold at once:

Every board has exactly one answer, and you can reach it by reasoning alone. You never have to guess.

Is Cat Sudoku the same as normal Sudoku?

No. There are no numbers to fill in. It is closer to the “Queens” puzzle some people play on LinkedIn, with cats in place of crowns. The name comes from the one-of-each rule that it shares with Sudoku: one per row, one per column, one per region.

How do I play on this site?

You tap squares, nothing else. The first tap places a cat. The second tap leaves a paw-mark, your own note that a cat can’t go there. The third tap clears the square.

When you place a cat, every square it rules out fills with a faint paw, so you can see at once where the next cats can’t go. If a cat breaks a rule, its square gets a red border.

How is it different from the Meowdoku app?

The rules are the same. The difference is in how mistakes and hints work.

According to its App Store listing, the Meowdoku app gives you three hearts, and wrong placements cost you a heart. Android Central’s review says its hints are earned through ads or in-game rewards.

On my version there are no hearts and no way to lose. A wrong cat simply shows a red border until you move it. The Hint button is always there and costs nothing. Each hint places one correct cat and tells you why it has to go there, for example “Row 3 has only one free square left where a cat can go: this one.” Clear board starts the same puzzle again.

How do I solve a Cat Sudoku?

Start with the smallest colour. A region of two or three squares leaves only a few places for its cat, and often the touching rule cuts that down to one.

Next, look for a colour that sits entirely inside one row. Its cat must be in that row, so no other square in that row can hold a cat. The same works for columns.

Each cat you place rules out its whole row, its whole column, its colour, and the eight squares around it. That last part is what makes the puzzle move: after two or three cats, most of the board is already crossed off.

When you are fairly sure a square is empty but don’t want to commit yet, leave a paw-mark on it.

Is there a daily Cat Sudoku?

Yes. Daily Cat Sudoku has one board a day, and everyone gets the same one. A new board arrives at midnight UTC. Monday and Tuesday are 5 by 5, Wednesday to Friday are 6 by 6, and the weekend boards are 7 by 7. If you solve it several days running, the game keeps count of your streak on your device.

Can I print a Cat Sudoku?

Yes. Press “Print this puzzle” under the board. You get an empty board with the rules at the top. Each region keeps its colour and also has a thick black outline, so the sheet still works on a black-and-white printer. You mark the cats with a pencil.

Is it in other languages?

Yes. The same game is in Spanish, French and German.

If you like number Sudoku too, there is large-print Sudoku with the same kind of Hint button.
